Jack felt the impact as the bullet hit his chest, knocking him backward to the floor. He had been shot before, but this felt different. Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. He blinked, stared at the light above him and tried to move. But he couldn’t. He could hear voices and more gunshots, but it all seemed so far away as light began to fade until he was surrounded by deep darkness. A darkness he had never experienced before. Then the voices were silent.

Chris watched Jack fall hard and fast. As soon as he hit the floor, the doors of the warehouse burst open and military police and other soldiers poured in. Peyton was already inside and had taken out a few of Ricky’s men hidden around the warehouse.

She turned and saw Ricky run toward a dark sedan parked along the back wall near another door. She ran after him, raised her gun and fired. He hit the floor and was still alive when she reached him. She stood over him, grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him up toward her. He looked at her, smiled and said, “My boss is not who you think he is, you know.”

Chris smiled back. “I do now.” And fired again. “That was for John and the girl,” she said as she let go of him and let him drop to the floor. She stood up and saw medics taking Jack out on a stretcher. Peyton was by his side, looked at her and nodded. The army major in charge of the raid walked over to her and said, “We need to clear out now, ma’am.”

Chris nodded and followed him out.
